Why I love this place
The Rossmarkt represents Alzey's "hub" and is thus the vital, pulsating heart of the city. Together with the adjacent Fischmarkt, it likely served as the actual marketplace of the town. Its name originates from a horse market that used to be held here in earlier times.
The square is defined today, on one hand, by the "Rossmarktbrunnen" (Rossmarkt Fountain) created in 1985 by the artist Gernot Rumpf from Neustadt. Standing at the fountain trough, the generously proportioned horse of the minstrel and knight Volker von Alzey primarily invites children to climb into the saddle and have their photographs taken.
Furthermore, it is the two decorated half-timbered houses from the 17th and early 18th centuries, positioned gable-end to the square, that architecturally lend the square its appealing character.
